Traditions
As we creep into the holiday season I really start to think about traditions. This year more than ever as we have moved into a new house with our ‘together’ family and this would be the perfect timing to start any new traditions for the holidays now that we are all together.
No matter how big or how small I have always loved the traditions we pass on. I loved them as a kid, and I love the new and the old ones I carry on with my kids now. My kids and I have a couple we have stayed loyal to over the last few years. One tradition for us is setting up Christmas decorations the weekend after thanksgiving. I do feel this is the norm for quite a few families but I feel like its an important tradition and I know my kids really look forward to it. Since mine are still fairly young I have usually started the process without them and left the stuff they can help with for the end when they are ready to join in. I am looking forward to them being another year older and available to participate in that much more. Every year for Christmas my kids receive an ornament with their name and the year on it. I usually get them personalized at the State Fair where my favorite Christmas booth is! I try to make them different each year and reflective of where my kids are at in their lives. Some are sports related, movie characters, foods they like, or just things they have liked to do a lot lately, but it has made it really fun to look back at this over the years. I will say my kids really look forward to hanging up those ornaments on the tree because as I unwrap the tissue paper to see which one is next to hang, the anticipation is exciting for all of us.
Another tradition my kids and I have is we all make mini homemade pizza’s for dinner before we open presents. We do our ‘family’ Christmas on the 23rd to make time for the extended family things but we usually start by making dinner and everyone gets to make their own pizza. I usually have all the topping options set out and the kids really have fun creating their own each year. Not to mention, yum! Homemade pizzas are the best!
